Music Engraving
For the most part, music simply soothes our souls, enabling us to relax, or at the opposite end, it completely rejuvenates us. Either way, we don’t always think of all the work and detail included in composing and creating music. It’s an incredibly involved process that extends well beyond a musician’s guitar or vocals. One of the quintessential parts of music preparation and composition is music engraving. This is the complex process of drawing musical notations. This is truly considered a form of art as it requires an immense eye for detail and faithfulness to high-quality accuracy so that mechanical reproductions can be made from the engravings.
As with most things, music engraving used to be solely done by hand. Although hand engraving does still exist today, and is sometimes considered the higher form of the two, computer engraving or computer setting has since taken the majority role. Computer software now offers amazing engraving capabilities. Most commonly known as scorewriters, these programs allow engravers to write, edit and print the music for dissemination. Whether or not the quality is similar to traditional engraving is arguable, but the ease with which engravers can manipulate individual components is simply amazing, saving them significant amounts of time and helping them to ensure a greater degree of accuracy in their work. After all, one of the main focuses of this art form is to produce clear, easily read music for all who view it, including illustrating the proper relationship of notes within the score, concise symbol notation and much more.
